
Warde, Fatma, and Munira begin their workday at 6 a.m., taking advantage of the coolest hours of the morning. On this day, the task is to prune and clear away dead leaves and roots from the cucumber plants growing in the greenhouses—work they know well and perform most days, often from atop ladders.

Munira*, 56, originally from Idlib, rests after a morning working in the greenhouse pruning and weeding.

Munira* sorts the cucumbers into the baskets ready for packing alongside her sister, Fatma, after a long day of working in greenhouses picking the cucumbers.

Ward cooks for her sisters and their kids with some left over zucchinis from their previous planting season. Ward cooks everyday for her family and they usually rely on their own produce for daily meals.

A young girl runs for the bus to return to her home located in one of the informal camps in the Beka Valley. She has just participated in a Christmas celebration event at a local education centre run by an NGO.

Nahla, 41, gently rocks her newborn son at her sister's home in the Bekaa Valley. Normally, she works on a cattle farm in the Mount Lebanon region, but she has traveled to Bekaa seeking medical assistance through UNHCR for her baby, who was born with a congenital condition affecting his urinary system.

Birds fly above an informal settlement of tents in the Beka valley. Hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees have lived in settlements like these for nearly 14 years.
