The younger generation is losing their future because of political turmoil, and many people are lost, not knowing what to do. Some are far from home and family, forced to flee due to the unrest. <image:caption>Warde, Fatma, and Munira begin their workday at 6 a.m., taking advantage of the coolest hours of the morning. On this day, they prune and clear away dead leaves and roots from the cucumber plants growing in the greenhouses. The sisters left Syria more than 13 years ago, fleeing bombing in Idlib. They arrived in Damour and have lived and worked on this land ever since. For them, as for many Syrian refugees, agricultural labor became a lifeline.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Warde picks away dead leaves and roots from the cucumber plants—part of her daily routine in the greenhouse. Though they come from a farming family in Syria, it was the women who took on most of the manual labor after arriving in Lebanon. “What can you do?” she says. “There is a lot of work that needs done. And if you don’t work, you can’t live.”</image:caption>

This photo was taken in December 2024, after Assad’s fall reignited the possibility of return for millions of Syrians around the world. Overlaid is a mobile image of her home in Idlib, along with a recent photo of her niece, taken in July. 'Everyone is going back to Syria,' the young man says, adding that he hopes to leave soon, as 'there are no job opportunities here in Lebanon.' The Christian charity, founded in 1926, has focused on supporting Glasgow’s homeless population since the 80s. As part of their services, the Mission provides daily meals of lunch and dinner, serving hundreds of people each day. With many refugees and asylum seekers housed in temporary accommodation and unable to cook for themselves, a significant number of those attending are seeking both a meal and a sense of community. Many asylum seekers who relied on this support from City Mission end up volunteering to cater these meals.</image:caption>

In response, counter-protesters part of “Falkirk for All” have gathered regularly outside the hotel in support of those staying there. Laura has regularly joined “Falkirk for All” but has faced severe backlash and threats from anti- immigration activists for her stance. She has been labelled a “traitor” online for speaking out. For her own safety, Laura now wears a body camera while in public. “The idea that the people in the hotel aren’t worthy of our love and empathy is crazy.
